Jacob Deem, Sr. was born in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland, on April 9, 1765, son of Johannes Adam Diehm and Anna Christina (Laudenclos).

As a young man, Jacob Deem lived in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania which later (in 1783) became Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, with his parents. During the Revolutionary War, Jacob Deem was residing at home with his father in Westmoreland Co., PA. There he enlisted 05/01/1781 as an Ensign under Captains Digman & Felty and Colonel Cook.

His commission as Ensign at the age of 17 was signed by Gov. Mifflin of Pennsylvania. Jacob Deem was a brother to Adam Deem Sr. (1761-1856) who also served in the Revolutionary War.

Jacob Deem is listed on the Luzerne Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, tax lists for 1787, 1788, 1789.

Jacob Deem married Miss Eva Ann "Patty" (Cox) in Pennsylvania about 1789.

Jacob Deem is also listed on the Luzerne Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, tax lists for 1793 & 1796.

Jacob Deem, Sr. moved to Harrison Co., (W.) Virginia, in 1796 (which became Wood County, (W.) VA, in 1798) from Brownsville (Red Stone), Fayette Co., PA, with his brother, Adam Deem, Sr. Jacob Deem settled on Tygarts Creek in Wood Co., (W.) Virginia, and he is listed on the 1797 tithables tax list.

Jacob Deem, Sr. applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service in Wood Co., (W.) Virginia, in 1834.

Jacob Deem, Sr. died at Chesterville, Wood Co., W. Va., in 1864, and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Chesterville, Wood Co., W. Va.
